University Committees

Competition Review Committee

Function

In 1988, the UW System Task Force on Competition with the Private Sector established formation of a Competition Review Committee at each UW institution. According to Regent Policy Document 12-1, which defines the full policy and criteria, the University has a responsibility to carefully consider any decision to provide products and services to students, faculty, staff, private organizations, or the public at large, particularly when the products and services to be provided might compete with similar products or services offered by the private sector. In response, this committee would be initiated by the chancellor if issues arise for the purpose of reviewing new or ongoing competitive activities whose appropriateness has been questioned.

Membership

This committee does not maintain standing appointees, rather committee membership will be selected once the committee is initiated. Committee membership will include:

1) One University vice chancellor appointed by the chancellor who does not have direct oversight of the product or service in question. The vice chancellor will serve as the committee chairperson

2) Representatives from University governance groups. The chancellor will request that the governance groups each appoint one representative to serve on the committee

3) One representative from the private sector with experience relevant to the activity being reviewed, selected by the committee chair

4) One representative from the public who would be a potential user of the product / service, but who has no current or likely future conflict of interest with the specific product/service under review, selected by the committee chair
